DR PETER CHIN
Peter Chin MBBS (Melb) FRACS is a Specialist Oncoplastic Breast and General Surgeon based in Tauranga. He is the Bay of Plenty’s most experienced breast surgeon, having performed more than 2,000 breast cancer operations over the last two decades. As a result, he is regularly referred complex cases from the Bay of Plenty region and further afield. He specialises in oncoplastic breast surgery, with expertise in laparoscopic hernia and gallbladder surgery, thyroidectomy, and lipoma, nodal and skin excisions.

BREAST CANCER

Over the past two decades, Peter has performed more than 2,000 breast cancer operations in the Bay of Plenty and established the Tauranga Hospital Breast Service. He continues to teach modern breast surgery techniques to surgeons and trainees across Australia and New Zealand. His experience, clear communication and thoughtful approach help ensure you receive comprehensive advice and feel well supported throughout your care.
ONCOPLASTIC BREAST SURGERY
Peter specialises in oncoplastic breast surgery, which combines safe cancer removal with careful attention to breast shape and appearance. He trained at the renowned Edinburgh Breast Unit and is one of the few breast surgeons in New Zealand who performs and teaches advanced oncoplastic procedures across Australia and New Zealand.
His areas of expertise include Therapeutic Mammoplasty, Perforator flaps, Fat grafting and Implant reconstruction. He continues to strive for excellence and is the first surgeon to perform a minimally-invasive endoscopic mastectomy (MIEM) and implant reconstruction in New Zealand, allowing for more accurate dissection and cosmetic outcome.
HERNIA REPAIR
Peter is trained in all forms of hernia surgery which include open and keyhole techniques. He is one of
the first surgeon to introduce Laparoscopic (keyhole) inguinal hernia surgery in the Bay of Plenty. He has a thorough and balanced approach when recommending the appropriate surgery for you.
GALLBLADDER
The presence of gallstones can cause debilitating pain and keyhole surgery is the standard option for
removal of a gallbladder. Peter is highly experienced and has performed keyhole gallbladder surgery (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy) for over 20 years.
THYROID
Thyroid surgery is a complex operation and requires expertise and skill which comes with experience. Peter has performed numerous thyroid operations in the Bay of Plenty and is able to advise you on the best course of action for the investigation and management of a thyroid lump.
LIPOMA / SKIN / NODAL SURGERY
Peter provides surgery for skin lesions, lipomas and lymph nodes, including melanoma excision and sentinel node biopsy. Your diagnosis and treatment options will be explained clearly.
